(5/5/10) -- Country music star "Big Kenny" Alphin will be on hand at 8:30 a.m. Monday, May 10, for groundbreaking ceremonies at the Deadwood Mountain Grand resort. The project will transform the former Homestake Slime Plant into a hotel, casino and concert venue.![]() In addition, Alphin, who gained fame as a member of the hit duo Big & Rich, will also be signing autographs and meeting with fans Saturday, May 8, at 4 p.m. at the Buffalo Bodega Complex on Deadwood’s Main Street. Alphin is one of the partners in the Deadwood Mountain Grand project. Others include Dale Morris, Marc Oswald and Dwight Wiles of Nashville, as well as local partners George Mitchell, Ron Wheeler, Tim Conrad and Mike Gustafson. Monday's groundbreaking ceremony and press event is set for 8:30 a.m., beginning at the Deadwood History and Information Center. Weather permitting, the event will move across the street to the Deadwood Mountain Grand property. Mayor Francis Toscana, Deadwood Chamber of Commerce officials, Alphin and other partners in TenTexKota LLC, the development company, will participate. When completed, the Deadwood Mountain Grand will include a 100-room upscale hotel, a 210-device casino, an entertainment and event center with seating for 2,500 people and a multi-level parking facility. The historic building, Deadwood’s most visible reminder of the city’s gold mining past, was constructed in 1905 by Homestake Mining Co. to process gold ore slurry from the Homestake Mine in Lead. TenTexKota’s development plans call for preserving the structure’s mining heritage while creating a modern lodging and entertainment complex in the heart of Deadwood. In the summer of 2009, extensive exterior work was completed to restore the plant’s historic steel façade. The Deadwood Mountain Grand name is derived from the hit song, "Deadwood Mountain," by Big & Rich, the country duo Big Kenny Alphin formed with John Rich in 1998. The two have played often in Deadwood, and they filmed their music video “Big Time” in Deadwood and nearby Rochford. -30-
