Fat Tire Festival named a 'Great Event' for 2010

Rapid City event set for May 28-31

RAPID CITY, S.D. (11-17-09) -- The Black Hills Fat Tire Festival, the annual event that each May draws mountain bikers from across the country, has been named by the South Dakota Office of Tourism as one of five Great Events for 2010. The 2010 Fat Tire Festival, based in Rapid City, is set for May 28-31.

The Great Events campaign is a competitive program developed by the Office of Tourism to boost visitor spending and increase the economic impact of the events in host communities.
Events organizers receive marketing assistance from the state for creative design, photography, ad placement, and public relations.

The other Great Events for 2010  are the South Dakota Outdoor Expo in Huron, June 12-13; Ipswich Trial Days,June 11-13; and the River City Racin' in Chamberlain, July 10-11.

“The Great Events campaign helps to promote events that are unique to our state,” said Richard Benda, Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Tourism and State Development. “These events provide family-friendly and affordable vacations that appeal to both local and out-of-state visitors.”

Nineteen communities across the state applied this year for the Great Events campaign.

“Although, not every applicant could be named a Great Event, we’re very encouraged by the number of quality applicants we received this year,” said Office of Tourism Director  Melissa Bump. “There truly are exciting events happening all across the state.”
