Magazine names Black Hills among world’s most scenic drives

BLACK HILLS, S.D. (11/12/09) -- National Geographic Traveler has listed the Black Hills as one of the most scenic drives in the world. The recent online article, “Drives of a Lifetime,” featured a number of Black Hills towns, attractions and byways.

The 900-word feature explores the scenic opportunities along the Needles Parkway and the Iron Mountain Road in the central Black Hills, as well as less-traveled roads such as the Sage Creek Rim Road in the Badlands. The story offers information on Deadwood, Rapid City, Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial.

“People come to see Mount Rushmore but what they discover while they’re here is how beautiful everything else is,” Mary Kopco of Deadwood’s Adams Museum & House told National Geographic.

Among the other Drives of a Lifetime featured by National Geographic Traveler were the Florida Keys, Massachusetts’ Cape Cod, Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, the Seward Highway in Alaska, Provence, France, and the Amalfi Coast in Italy.
