Horsted to present "Crossing the Plains with Custer" at the Adams Museum

DEADWOOD (11/9/09) -- Photographer and /historian Paul Horsted will present a program at the Adams Museum in Deadwood on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 1:00 p.m., titled Crossing the Plains with Custer, based on the new book by that name. A book signing will follow the program.

Horsted is co-author of the new book (with Ernest Grafe and Jon Nelson), which has been designed as a matching companion volume to the earlier Exploring with Custer: The 1874 Black Hills Expedition written by Horsted and Grafe several years ago.

Exploring with Custer followed the 1874 Custer Expedition through the Black Hills. This second book completes the story by tracing the explorers’ trail some 300 miles to the Black Hills from Fort Lincoln, and then back again on a separate 355-mile trail. Dozens of color photographs show places where the wagon train passed based on Col. Ludlow's map.

Selections from diaries, official reports and newspaper accounts tell about each day's travel or highlight the photographs using the explorer's own words. Another special section of the book features artifacts of the Custer Expedition; these items photographed from several collections were found at campsites on private land.

The event is co-sponsored by the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission, Adams-Mastrovich Family Foundation, Rapid City Journal and the Black Hills Pioneer.

Crossing the Plains with Custer is available at the Adams Museum in soft cover for $45.00 or hardcover for $75.00.
