Josh Daiss to lead BHB&L Association

RAPID CITY, S.D. (10/30/09) — Josh Daiss has been elected Chairman of the Board for Black Hills, Badlands & Lakes Association. He will lead the board and staff of South Dakota’s largest tourism trade association during 2009-2010. He was elected from 30 directors at the Association’s annual meeting October 30.

Daiss is general manager of the Mt. Rushmore KOA in Hill City. He said he is excited and humbled by the opportunity to lead western South Dakota’s largest tourism organization.

Hot Springs Chamber director George Kotti was re-elected vice-chair and Michele Loobey-Gertch, executive director of the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Bureau, was elected treasurer. All three officers will serve one-year terms.

The policy-making board is comprised of 17 appointed community representatives, six trade association spokespersons, three attractions and six at-large delegates. The Board of Directors, together with five committees, supervises all aspects of the Association’s tourist promotions.

Moving into its 70th year, the regional tourist promotion corporation for the Black Hills is financed almost entirely by private tourist operators. The organization places advertising, publishes three visitor magazines including the South Dakota Vacation Guide and conducts press activities and direct sales programs to generate tourist traffic for the region.

The Board approved a $1.845 million program of work for 2010 that includes expansion of computer, website and Internet marketing efforts. The Association says “new media” promotions — websites, banner ads, paid search words, online publicity and e-mail bulletins to customers — continue to grow in importance.

The Association currently lists 501 member businesses in western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming.
Following the business meeting, members gathered at a luncheon to celebrate the 2009 tourist season and honor the recipient of the Association's Special Achievement Award and inductees into the Black Hills Tourism Pioneers hall of fame.

The Association is a private, non-profit corporation headquartered at the Black Hills Visitor Information Center in Rapid City, and employs a staff of 11 full-time and 12 seasonal employees to implement Black Hills tourist promotions.
