Black Hills News StoriesGo back to News ArticlesAdams Museum presents Homestake: Its Past & FutureDEADWOOD (10/28/09) -- A presentation on the past and future of the Homestake Mine will be presented by Steven T. Mitchell and Dr. Jose Alonso Thursday, Nov. 19 at the Adams Museum at 1 p.m.![]() Mitchell will be discussing the history of the Homestake Mine, where he worked as an engineer and in management positions. Mitchell is a life-long resident of the Black Hills and will soon be releasing a book, Nuggets to Neutrinos: The Homestake Story. Alonso, Sanford Underground Laboratory's emeritus director, will supply information on Homestake's future. Before joining forces with Sanford Underground Laboratory, Alonso attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he earned his doctorate in nuclear physics. He then went on to conduct research at Yale University and finally joined the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California for a 30-year career. Alonso's experience involves assisting in the discovery of the element seaborgium, and he was also a part of the team that organized the Atlas Dector for the new Large Hadron Collider at the CERN Laboratory in Switzerland. The event is hosted by Black Hills State University and the Adams Museum and House, Inc. The presentation of Homestake: It's Past and Future requires registration due to limited space.
