Deadwood named a Forbes Traveler 'Prettiest Town'

DEADWOOD, S.D. (10/16/09) - Forbes Traveler magazine has named Deadwood to its list of "America's Prettiest Towns," in a feature posted Oct. 13 on the magazine's website. Deadwood was chosen for its historic architecture and picturesque setting in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

"This historic town still breathes with the rugged spirit and beauty of a frontier town," said John Vander Stelt, an Iowa-based artist and member of the Forbes Traveler panel of experts. Vander Stelt's fine art paintings primarily focus on family and small town life. He was joined on the Forbes Traveler panel by photographers, urban designers and travel writers to judge the magazine's annual cityscape beauty pageant.

"Like all such pageants, this is a subjective one - but we've received help from several experts with keen eyes for architecture, aesthetics, and small-town charm," the editors said.

The panel chose America's 20 prettiest towns, including Santa Fe, N.M., Annapolis, Md., Rockport, Maine, Lake Placid, N.Y., Sedona, Ariz., Savannah, Ga., and Deadwood.

"It's really an honor to be listed alongside these well-known, beautiful cities," said George Milos, director of the Deadwood Chamber of Commerce. "We work hard to maintain Deadwood's historic character, and being named to Forbes Traveler's Prettiest Towns list shows us that we're succeeding ."

The magazine noted that historical richness can add extra appeal to a town's prettiness, and Deadwood's past includes gold-rush fortune-seekers, outlaws, Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane.

The feature included a photograph of modern Deadwood's Main Street architecture with the Black Hills as a backdrop.
