Deadwood's 'Deadweird' Costume Contest Oct. 31

$5,000 in cash and prizes to be awarded to best costumes; Halloween weekend to include Haunted House in Deadwood

DEADWOOD, S.D. (10/15/09) – The Black Hills’ premier Halloween party is slated for Oct. 31 in Deadwood. "Deadweird" features the fun of Halloween in a historic atmosphere, and costume-clad revelers hit the town in some of the most inventive and hilarious costumes anywhere. One reason for the event’s success is the prizes.

“Deadweird has evolved into a costume contest where the sky’s the limit. The Deadwood Chamber has made it very lucrative for creative costuming, offering more than $5,000 in cash and prizes to costume contest winners,” said George Milos, Deadwood Chamber executive director.

Contestants will go to one judging location – the Lucky Nugget Gambling Hall on Main Street in Deadwood – between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. to be judged. The Lucky Nugget will also host a Halloween party throughout the evening, culminating with the awards ceremony at 10 p.m. There will be music, dancing, door prizes and more. Contestants must be present to win.

More than 200 people entered the costume contest last year, and hundreds more attended the event, both in and out-of costume, simply to enjoy Halloween festivities. Prizes are awarded for the best costumes, including most creative, scariest and best group.

HAUNTED HOUSE: There’s plenty of history in Deadwood, some of which include the spooky spirited kind. For a haunted house experience not for the faint of heart, look to the old brothel above the Lucky Nugget Gambling Hall on Deadwood’s Main Street.

The brothel is being transformed into a haunted house to be held Friday, Oct. 30, from 6 p.m. to midnight, and Saturday, Oct. 31, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. The cost is $5, with proceeds benefitting the Lead/Deadwood Optimist’s Club. This haunted house is not recommended for children under the age of 13, or for anyone with a heart condition.
