The fourth annual event attracted a record number of racers and mountain-bike enthusiasts from across South Dakota and the region on May 28-31. Even though the 30 rides, six races and a film festival are over, the 2010 Fat Tire Festival is still boosting area tourism.![]() "There is a trickle down affect that the community receives with out-of-town mountain bikers that may not have attended the festival, but have become aware of our trails through our promotions and word of mouth," says Kristy Lintz, Recreation Program Specialist at the Rapid City Department of Parks & Recreation. "We saw an increase of out-of-state license plates at our trailheads last year and expect the same to happen this year." Riders and racers came from states such as Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, Kansas, Indiana, Utah and Georgia to compete at M Hill in Rapid City. The three-day event also included a triathlon with a combination of biking, kayaking and running. Other rides were held on the Mickelson and Centennial Trails outside of Rapid City. Organizers have compiled the official numbers for this year's Fat Tire Festival. They show a significant increase in participation, recording 278 race entries. Participation at social events, such as the barbeque and film festival, also rose considerably from past events. Planning has already begun for next year's race. Organizers intend to once again host the festival on Memorial Day weekend. The races will be held at the same location, but the course configuration will be changed. Organizers also plan to add new activities to the fifth annual event. "We hope to appeal to all types of racers," says Lintz. "We will continue with the three staple races, the Super D, Hill Climb and Cross Country, but want to expand some of the categories in the specialty races, like the Dirk's Downhill and Triathlon to appeal to all types of racers."
