This year St. Patrick’s Day will be celebrated twice in Deadwood -- first on Saturday, March 13, and again on Wednesday, March 17, which is the birthday of Ireland’s patron saint. March 13 events include an afternoon pub crawl, a 7 p.m. parade and live music. The March 17 celebration begins with the 5 p.m. parade and continues through the evening. Deadwood has been celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with parades and other festivities since 1981, when Deadwood businessman Bill Walsh began the tradition. Each year, an area resident of Irish descent is chosen as parade marshal for the annual event. Griffith will take her place of honor in the March 17 St. Patrick’s Day Parade. A fourth-generation South Dakotan, Griffith is of Irish descent through her grandmother Dorothy Murray. Also, Griffith recently toured Ireland on assignment for the Universal Press Syndicate. She and her husband Tom founded TDG Communications in 1994, a Deadwood-based advertising and public relations agency with a staff of 15. Nyla Griffith is a former Deadwood City Commissioner and former president of Deadwood-Lead Economic Development Corp. She currently serves as chairwoman of Northern Hills Alliance for Children, and she’s on the Executive Board of the South Dakota Democratic Party, and sits on the boards of Youthwise and Northern Hills Habitat for Humanity. Griffith is a published novelist, and her travel photos have appeared in numerous national newspapers and magazines including the Los Angeles Times, Arkansas Democrat and Skywest Magazine. She and Tom have four children and two grandchildren. The Deadwood-Lead area has a longstanding Irish tradition dating back to the early days of hard-rock mining in the 1870s and 1880s. -1876- For More Information: |
